Online Universities Surge in Their Use of Wireless and Mobile Devices

With the advent of Web 2.0 online tools and applications, online universities have become more popular than ever. Obtaining an education via the Internet allows people that are working full time or who have other time constraints to be able to obtain the education they desire. There are a large number of accredited online universities that offer high-quality educations. Each virtual university has its own proprietary networking system where students can interact with one another and engage in the learning process.
Digital Students and the Online Learning Environment
Online universities are aware of what types of students seek out the virtual learning environment. Today's student is well versed in wireless technology. After all, many have never known life without the Internet. A recent study showed that 71 percent of students use the Internet on a daily basis. Over 50 percent use the Internet daily for social networking. Students not only access the Internet on their computers but on a variety of mobile devices, as well. In order to meet the needs and cater to the learning styles of the digital student, online universities heavily incorporate digital technology into their curriculum.
Types of Devices Utilized
In order to take full advantage of the virtual environment, students should be able to use a wide variety of mobile or wireless devices. Personal learning networks are the backbone of almost every online learning environment. Professors require students to engage in discussion boards, post to blogs, and interact on various social networking sites and more. Many require and use an e-book, which students must download and read. In order for universities to stay competitive and flexible, students will need the ability to use their laptops, wireless phones, iPads, iPhones, and Kindles in order to participate properly in online class activities.
